Kidney Donation Basics
A matching kidney is helpful, but it is not required. Through the National Kidney Registry (NKR), a donor can give a kidney on my behalf, and I would receive a compatible kidney from another living donor through a paired exchange or through the Voucher Program. This program helps more people receive transplants faster and provides better outcomes.
The cost of donor testing, surgery and hospitalization is covered. The NKR’s Donor Shield Program may also help with expenses such as travel and lost wages. Living donors are carefully screened and will only be allowed to move forward if donation is safe for them. Approved donors can live healthy, normal lives with one kidney.

Where To Donate
Donors can live anywhere and can donate at over 100 NKR-affiliated transplant centers.
Liver Donation Basics
A living donor would donate only a piece of their liver. The donor’s remaining liver will grow back to a normal size, and the piece donated to me will grow to a normal size as well.
