Can I Get a Free Website to Search for a Kidney Donor?

Timothy Jagemann, Director of Marketing, Microsite Product Manager

If you or someone you love needs a kidney transplant, you may be wondering whether having a website could help you reach more potential donors.

The good news is that you can get a free website designed for this specific purpose, called a microsite, through the National Kidney Registry.

What Is a Microsite?

A microsite is a free, personalized website created for patients who need a kidney transplant and are looking for a living donor. Microsites are offered exclusively through the National Kidney Registry.

There are two types:

  • A starter microsite includes your name and need for a kidney transplant, as well as general information about living kidney donation and a link for potential donors to start the evaluation process.
  • A custom microsite is personalized to include photos and your individual story. You can explain your medical journey, tell potential donors about yourself, and describe what your life is like now and how a transplant would change your future. Many patients also share personal details such as family, hobbies, and interests to help potential donors feel a more personal connection.

Why Not Just Build Your Own Website?

A personal website can be a helpful tool in your search for a living kidney donor, but building and maintaining one on your own can take significant time, money, and technical effort.

Even with user-friendly platforms like Wix or Squarespace, you still need to choose a design, write and organize all your content, secure a domain name, and manage ongoing updates. While the upfront cost may be relatively low, many “basic” plans still include limitations such as platform branding or advertisements unless you upgrade to a paid tier.

Beyond the technical setup, there is also the challenge of making the site effective. A donor search website needs more than just information—it needs clear messaging, emotional storytelling, and a simple way for potential donors to take action. Without guidance, many patients find this process overwhelming.

Another important limitation is connectivity. A self-built website won’t be able to connect with your transplant center. This means potential donors must navigate the registration process on their own, which can be time-consuming and confusing. You can provide contact information for your transplant center, but there is no direct integration or streamlined pathway from your site to the donor intake process.

A microsite addresses these challenges by providing a ready-to-use platform designed specifically for kidney donor outreach, making it easier for people to learn about you and take the next step.

How Does the Microsite Process Work?

Getting started is simple. Any transplant center that participates in the Microsite Program can help you set up a starter site. If you are not yet working with a center or want to switch to a microsite center, you can register through the National Kidney Registry.

After you set up your starter microsite, you will receive a unique URL to your site to share via email and social media, as well as 250 free business cards to hand out to family, friends, and acquaintances, and 10 posters to display in your community. When you transition to a personalized site, you can request 25 free custom posters that include your photo.

All microsite patients have the option of connecting with a donor search coach—experts who have found themselves or a loved one a living kidney donor. Donor search coaches can explain how microsites work, help you write your story, and give you valuable tips to boost your donor search efforts. Donor search coaches, like microsites, are completely free.

How a Microsite Can Help You Find a Donor

A microsite makes it easier to share your story with a large number of people. Instead of having to describe your medical needs over and over, you can simply share your website link.

It also helps your support network get involved. Friends, family, coworkers, and community members can share your microsite on social media or distribute business cards and posters. A simple message like “My loved one needs a kidney—here is their story” can go a long way in expanding your reach.

Microsites also link directly to your transplant center’s donor intake system, making it easier for potential donors to start the screening process.

In addition, microsites provide information about donor protections and support programs such as Donor Shield, which includes lost wage reimbursement and coverage for donation-related expenses like travel, lodging, and dependent care.

Finding a living kidney donor can feel overwhelming, but microsites help simplify the process and make your efforts more impactful. By combining storytelling, education, and easy access to donor screening, they give patients a powerful tool to reach more people and increase the chances of finding a match.
