The National Kidney Registry Announces its 1,000th Microsite Transplant

Today the National Kidney Registry (NKR) achieved a significant milestone: the 1,000th Microsite patient who received a living donor transplant.

IIt took the NKR approximately six years to facilitate 1,000 Kidney Paired Donation (KPD) transplants from its inception in 2008. Today, the NKR is facilitating approximately 2,000 KPD transplants per year. The Microsite program is following a similar trajectory, achieving the 1,000-transplant milestone, six years after the program’s launch.

The 1,000th Microsite transplant took place at Froedtert Hospital in Milwaukee, WI. “This milestone reflects the power of innovation in transplant care,” said Dr. Matthew Cooper, MD, Froedtert’s Chief of Transplantation, Director of Solid Organ Transplant and the NKR’s Surgical Director. “The Microsite program is giving patients a stronger voice and a real path to finding a living donor—one that can lead to better outcomes and longer lives.”

The Microsite program provides kidney and liver patients with a free personalizable website and one-on-one coaching, from a team of full-time professional coaches, helping patients share their story and increase their chances of finding a living donor.

Since launching in February 2019, the Microsite program has achieved a 33% success rate, which means 33% of Microsite patients receive a living donor transplant within 2 years of Microsite activation. Today, over 5,500 patients have active Microsites.
