How the Standard Voucher Program Can Help Your Child Receive a Living Donor Kidney Sooner
For a child with kidney disease, every day matters. A kidney transplant can restore energy, support healthy growth, and help children return to school, activities, and a more normal childhood.
But finding a compatible living kidney donor match can take time. The National Kidney Registry’s (NKR’s) Standard Voucher Program gives families another option by allowing a qualified donor to donate now, while providing the child access to NKR’s nationwide network of living donors to identify a well-matched kidney.
The Challenge of Finding a Living Donor Match
When a child needs a kidney transplant, many families immediately begin searching for a living donor. Family members and friends may be willing to donate, but not everyone who wants to help will be a compatible match.
A donor and recipient may not match because of blood type, antibodies, or other medical factors. In addition, many centers will only evaluate one potential donor at a time, which means that if a potential donor is eliminated, the child is back to square one.
How the Standard Voucher Program Works
The Standard Voucher Program allows a qualified living donor to donate a kidney on behalf of a child, even if that donor is not a direct match.
Instead of finding a donor who is a direct match for the child, an eligible donor can donate through the NKR, helping another transplant candidate while generating a voucher for the child. When the child is medically ready for transplant, the voucher is activated, giving them priority for a living donor kidney through the NKR’s nationwide network. Access to this larger pool of potential donors increases the likelihood of finding a well-matched kidney.
This approach allows a willing donor to donate when they are ready, while preserving the opportunity for the child to receive a well-matched living donor kidney. By expanding the search beyond the child’s immediate network, the Standard Voucher Program may help reduce the time it takes to find a compatible living donor. According to recent NKR data, voucher recipients have a median wait time of approximately 1.9 months after their voucher is activated.
For families facing pediatric kidney disease, the Standard Voucher Program offers another path to living donor transplantation by transforming the generosity of one willing donor into access to a nationwide network of potential matches. While a voucher does not guarantee a transplant, it can significantly expand a child’s opportunity to receive a well-matched living donor kidney.
