C.T. Fletcher is a 65-year-old U.S. Army veteran, husband, father, and grandfather. Known worldwide as a motivational speaker and former powerlifting champion. He is a heart transplant recipient who is now also fighting kidney failure.
Why I Need a Kidney
I’ve never been one to ask for help. My life has always been about grit, hard work, and pushing myself beyond limits most people thought impossible. When my heart gave out, a stranger’s gift gave me a second chance — and I have spent every day since trying to honor that gift by inspiring others to fight their battles with courage and faith.
Now, I face another battle. My kidneys are failing, and I need a transplant. Saying those words is not easy. I am far more comfortable being the one lifting others up than the one asking for help. But I want to be clear: my number one reason for sharing this is not for myself. Whether I am blessed enough to receive a kidney or not, if I can shine a light on the thousands of others who are waiting, then my mission is fulfilled.
The truth is, others’ survival is far more important than mine. I am already an old man. These kids, these young fighters, these fathers and mothers in their prime — they must live. If my story can bring attention to their struggle, spark hope, and inspire people to step forward as donors, then every word I’ve spoken here will have been worth it.
But if I am given the blessing of a kidney, I will not take it lightly. It would allow me to keep fighting, to keep teaching, and to keep shining a light on the issue for as long as God allows me to breathe. My voice has reached millions around the world, and I know what a platform like mine can do when it comes to bringing awareness. With renewed strength, I can continue to carry this mission — not just for myself, but for every patient waiting, every family praying, and every fighter who needs to know that hope is still alive.
